Question about the tone control on Adern's kickme too

Hi, I've been using kickme too for a few days as a repacement for my various 808 samples and I'm very happy with the sound.

But...normally I tune my bass drums to the track I'm working on. Using the tone control is fine but would be better and quicker if I could just enter in the frequency I want to set it to. There was nothing in the readme file, does anyone know a way to either enter the the frequency directly into the tone control or to make the tone control display the frequency while I'm adjusting it? Or do I need to buy Flexor to get that kind of fucntionality? Or I am just missing something obvious? :-?

kick-me is a musical instrument. its not about the numbers.

since a good kick never reaches the bottom frequency before the envelope closes i don't know what you hope to achieve by knowing the bottom frequency - since it doesnt reprisent anything about the kick.

you are far better off tuning kick-me by ear. and if you want to recreate values using the preset manager can come quite handy.

creating the kickme kick in scope modular is next to impossible with the phase bug - but its very easy to make with SDK using the flexor modules packed under 1 dsp.

"kickme" or "kickme too" is one of my favorite tool for creating kicks.
i have some VST kick modules, but i'm missing that punch for powerfull bass kick line.

Red_MuZe, Yes, I think kick-me is a musical instrument, that's exactly the issue, I'm using the sound to play a bass line in a hip hop track - I regulary to this with 808 samples. For the bass line I need to play an E1, a G1 and A1. As frequnecies these are 41.2 hz, 48.9 hz and 55 hz. So I have three instances of Kickme - All I want to do is to enter 41, 49 or 55 directly into the tone control specifically so that I can use it to place notes like any other muscial instrument. Doing it with tone control took too long as it didn't display the current frequency while being adjusted, only after when I hove the mouse pointer over it.

That said, I'm not sure I understand - "since a good kick never reaches the bottom frequency before the envelope closes i don't know what you hope to achieve by knowing the bottom frequency - since it doesnt reprisent anything about the kick." , if I set the waveform to sine and the tone to 55hz are you saying this won't result in the note A1? If that's true I guess I will have to tune them by ear. I had hoped to do an octave and save the notes a presets for future productions.

part of what makes the kick sound is a pitch envelope, it's not just putting out a straight note value, there is a frequency but the pitch envelope puts it up higher and quickly brings it down and normally, unless you have a long decay, the sound ends before the base frequency is reached.

What you want is a long decay 808 style kick with the ability to enter frequency by number, is that right? I could do this for you, but I'm on holidays and won't be home until next week sometime. I have made a drum machine, Beatz, it's in the devices section somewhere, I could take the kick module from that and release it alone and put in a frequency text selector for you. Get Beatz and let me know if you think that kick would be good. The percussion on this has the frequency text input, but it's for the fm only, not for the sine frequency.

Actually I could possibly make it like a synth so you could play it and wouldn't have to have more than one open to get different notes.

Jah Servant,

Thanks for the response, I understand a pitch envelope. Normally I use various 808 samples and tune them by ear on the sampler until they sound right. I tune the decay part to whatever melody or chord part it's playing under.

If the sound never reaches the base frequency (I've never had to think about it before) then I will just have to use my ear which is fine, it just takes a longer. I was using the sine wave in kickme too so the pitch enevelope shouldn't have applied? I just wanted the wave to play a G or E or whatever, tuning a low frequency sine wave by ear on headphones (it was 1am!) is far more difficult (for me) than just entering the frequency.

Seeing the tone control was frequency based on the kickme too made me think I could use it to create the kind of bass I want and then tune it with the tone control to fit the track. Then hopefully changing the wave forms (even allowing for envelope changes) would let me audtion a range of sounds for a track without having to retune every time. This may be the case anyway, I'll try it.

Yes, what I want is a "long decay 808 style kick with the ability to enter frequency by number"
A chromatic 808 drum synth is something I've wanted for a while. I have one already in Kontakt but it doesn't hit as hard as kickme too. Like most things I'll put that down to scope's sound quality.

Thanks for the kind offer, I'll check out the beatz device and let you know how it goes.

Seven Five, not sure how useful this might be, but if you let the mouse cursor rest over the tone knob a little bit in KickMeToo, it does show the frequency value. Unfortunately, while you move the knob, it doesn't change, even if it's visible, but maybe you can get a good approximation of the freqencies you're after, and then tweak by ear...

Sorry if you noticed this already.

All the best, and I hope you can get your kicks!

if you want i can make a kickme that follows the keyboard wouldnt that be nicer than dealing with numerbs.

That would be really awesome! To me it's very useful and I did request keyboard follow for the tune parameter, but I thought it would be a hassle to program/imlement that afterwards, and apart from that it's already an excellent device. :)

Nice, if you do it he'd get just what he wanted, I was just offering a little something to try and help. I think having it follow the keyboard would be the way to go.

:o Red_MuZe that would be fantastic and def better than dealing with numbers! If you can find the time it would be greatly appreciated and I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one making use of it.

All Righty then!! :)

That means that Kickme Too will not only be a ultra tight drumsynth as it already is, but it will also become a lean mean bass monster for creating those ultra low trouserflapping 808 basslines playable from your keyboard! 8)

numbers?

No, numerbs, they're about the equivalent, just made from better quality parts.

And a kickme with that kind of keyboard control sounds awesome.
