USB Sticks

Post by nightscope »

Are all USB sticks much the same? Apart from size and that some support USB1 & 2. Should I just snaffle the cheapest?

Merci.

I accept the disposability the American economy is based on in respects to many consumer lines, but the Chinese use the 90 day Year Of The Dog Calender or some shit, so watch out.

Several of these I used one time and turned them into storage. They were kept in a basket by my internet PC and when I did some new installs to clean up a DAW I noticed after sticking them in various USB ports and even my Hub I would get a window that said install disc !!! I was pissed. I won't even buy anything including CME controllers, etc. from China ever again. They have zero Q & A and probably used prisoners to build these.

I thought it was because of the larger sizes but this was not the case.
Got a couple of OCZ Rally 2 16GB's and so far so good. I am sure OCZ tested them, they do not want their name tarnished from some little stick.

One other thing to look out for in addition to the info in that thread - just because something is USB2, doesn't mean it's fast. A stick can have a USB2 interface but contain the dog-slowest memory possible, making the speed of USB2 useless. Most cheapo sticks are around 3-5 MB/sec write, 5-10 MB/sec read. Make sure you check out all the specs before you buy. IMHO it pays to spend a bit extra in this department - if you value your data and time anyway.
