New XITE-1 review available in (german) Recording Magazin

				the german magazine
Recording Magazin (or
recmag, for short) issued a review in their current issue 1/2010 covering the XITE-1.
I'm afraid I can't just scan and upload it for copyright reasons, but I may compile a summary via pm, if desired

Yes, you should absolutely buy a copy of the magazine if you want to read the review!
Cheers,
Chris Korff...
...he of another music tech print publication...
No offence intended Kylie, and I'm probably wrong, but the wink there might suggest to some people that you'd be willing to send excerpts of Recmag's review via PM - which, while not quite the same as some of the torrent sites I've seen (

) uploading entire issues of magazines wholesale, would still be pretty reprehensible.

although I don't see that I could derive a right to do so for the reasons below, I, personally, don't feel too bad doing a translation of (the full version or at least parts of) an article of a print magazine into a language it was not written for and is not intended to publish in by the originator, for making this special part available to people not even being able to buy themselves a printed copy, and even if so, would not be able to read it because they won't understand it.
I might be still a bad guy if I do so, but then, we're talking about
my karma here...
nevertheless I don't see why I should not ask the publisher for permission to do a translation for the planet. I should have made clear, furthermore, that I did not intend to send anything to people in germany who can either buy it themselves or steal their copy from the shop.

				Hi Kylie,
Like I said, no offence intended, and (especially considering the translation side of things) I certainly wouldn't call it evil! Contestible? Definitely... It all depends on the agreement that the author has with Recmag - did Recmag pay the writer for the content in ALL languages? German only? Does the author expect remuneration for his work to be used in other languages, even if Recmag don't intend to translate it themselves? Does he reserve the right to get paid for it again if it gets re-published in English? French? Italian?
It's a grey area, and as such you're probably in the "until someone stops me it's fine" camp (CF Logic 5.5 for PC, etc...)
It's just that (having seen how many copies of the mag I work for end up on torrent sites, DAYS after the hard copies get back from the printers!) it bothers me a bit that, while people here will actively criticise anyone asking about cracked software or plug-ins, or pirated music, they're not as aware that the publishing industry is under threat from on-line copyright violation in the same way as programmers and musicians are!
Cheers!
Chris

				By the way
don't know if you have taken care about the legal notice printed in books but, they don't aloow you to store it in an information retrieval system system (which memory is) nor transmitted (spoken about). So gloablly you purchase a book that you cannot read nor spoke about without being sued

cheers

that is a review for scope in general. the abovementioned (I like that word) article is about xite-1 in particular. did you give it a go, or is that just what you expect to feel like if you did?

I absolutely agree on the fact that it is a grey area. it's grey enough for me in the darkrooms of pm. no offence taken, chris.
of course I can only encourage people to buy the magazine. or read it in the book shop at the station. my goal was to let people know who can't do that for the reasons above.
there are a lot of "do they..? does it.." and if's in your comment, and some of them might be relevant to someone. I think I understand your point of view, but don't see myself as a thief of intellectual property.
there isn't much in that article that justifies the term "intellectual property" because frequent readers of planetz would be able to compile that from freely shared user experience and some marketing details from S|C themselves without committing thievery, imho.
you could make up your own opinion by reading the article, but I'm afraid I cannot hand it over to you since that seems violating your professional honor. SCNR

(no offense meant, of course)

I don't think it would be unethical for someone to summarize the review for us non-German speakers, would it?
I'd be interested to know (at least) whether they liked it or hated it!

				hi ben,
I agree, so here's what they think about it:
+ sound quality in general
+ integration possibilities
+ IO count
+ mic preamps
+ plugin library
- installation procedure (at least I would interprete the corresponding part this way)
- no recognition of usb controllers or keyboards connected to the host system
and they seemed to slightly prefer scope mode over xtc.

				hallo ben,

I got a glimpse of the review when I was over at Sonic Core's offices last week. The review seems quite thorough, and really great in the diagrams and screen shots they show of their test results. (It's long as well, with 5-6 pages of info!) It's too bad there's no English translation of it available - they would without a doubt get some serious recognition with this review!
Cheers,
John B.
