Millenium Girl

Its a tradition now that every year wifey goes on a holiday around this time and I get to write a doof-doof song for her. Last year's was 'The Only girl For Me', this years it's 'Millenium Girl'
http://soundcloud.com/hitfoundry/millenium-girl
This time I had three extra weapons more than last year - Mattomat, Celmo's Tape Echo Simulator and PSY-Q. Mattomat during the intro, middle break and end sequencing Minimax and the Celmo delay on the middle bridge vocals. Then PSY-Q in the mastering chain, which I only started using recently.
It took three days programming, with blue-screening the second day due to I suspect confusing minimax by overloading it with CC's fed from both Mattomat itself and Cubase controller lanes, merged simultaneously DOH !
Anyway suggestions welcome as I still have a coupla days to tweak before she gets back.

she'll probably like it, very catchy tune ...
from a purely production related aspect this might fit peksi's question about 'Professional Sound Quality' from general discussion
the track looses definition by the amount of processing applied... the synths fit perfectly, tho - well choosen.
(I've added a link to that thread, which features some of the most 'defined' sounds I'm aware of)
cheers, Tom

Well in my proofreading mode may I suggest you call it Millennium Girl?

thanks - the link provides a good example re minimalizing arrangement and processing - noted.

classic trance pop? Almost so classic that it sounds newwave. Definitely lots happening to the vocals.. the chorus-y effect is quite overpowering I think. Also the bass could use a bit more higher freq attack to give it some definition. Like with the 16th note phrases, one note blends into the next creating more of a legato rather than a rapid succession of defined 16ths. Same with the phasy synth part (more attack). Kind of gets buried so it's missing percussive definition. It's doing some sort of percussive pattern, but it's not contributing too much or as much as it could.
Song writing is good. I like the song.

Thanks. These tips will help fine tune it especially if I decide enter it into any song writing comps.

I really enjoy this song. It's very catchy. It reminds me of my days as a DJ when I used to play things very much like this. You have a good voice too. This song reminds me of something I used to play alot

The tone of the song is obviously completely different but the sound and vibe is similar. Thanks for sharing.

53E7, thanks for the comparison to Depeche Mode, Im not a huge fan of my own vocal sound, as I find it a bit nasal and agree with Kensuguro about it being overpowering w/ the electro FX. I'd much rather sound like Dave Gahan but one has to go with what god gave, or if all else fails maybe pull off a decent Zappa parody
I am actually contemplating trying a service such as the following, so would appreciate if anyone else has tried something like this :

Thanks all for the +ve feedback on the songwriting/arrangments etc.
EDIT: I have started a new post about the session singers here :

Synths are terrific, really nice sounding; chords, structure, melody, definitely a song that would get you
Not sure the effects used for the voice are the best, unless you were to use them for the chorus for instance, but not more than that. I think that this particular phasy sound through all the song is too much. It’s a nice voice timber, I would like to listen at it clear and upfront, if you like sort of the EQing used in “Do you believe in love after love”. I felt strongly compelled to listen to this song with a natural voice, and curiously, with an even harder use of effects when the chorus part comes.

Doof-doof?
Ok, then yes, I guess this sounds pretty doof-doof.

Thanks Nestor. Re synths, I re-use the one same John Bowen Prowave Pad which really is one of the best pads Ive ever heard, second only to the 10CC 'I'm not in love' one.
Re vocal, once I get the David Steel session vocal back, I'll make a mix with no effect on it, and another with the Cher autotune type effect, then re-post for opinions.

Am I hearing side-chain?

No, no side chain on this. It just pumps a bit because of the kick (boosted with DAS Legend) then hitting Brickmaster as the final unit on the mastering chain.
Brickmaster is kinda cool like that as you can get the sort of sidechain pump without having to set it all up as such.

Cool.
I like it even if it is a doof-doof song

Thanks Sirius. I know what you mean though that kick can seem a bit overpowering at times. I may pull it back a bit.
I live in a busy street and on a Saturday night at 1AM we often hear that doppler thump dada thump dada thump dada hoon car burning up the street.
That's the kinda aural image that probably influences me when mixing this kinda track
