old ribbon rules :)
Played bass on an album last week - was sent an early pre-overdub rough that comprised of just an ancient RCA 77 on kit, Wagner 47 on bass rig and guitar, guide vox. For crying out loud that RCA mic leaves little to be improved upon. Musical is the word

yes, things were made with care in those days. they weren't made to be upgraded every six months.
were you using an actual ribbon mic pre? if not, you'd be amazed to know that it should sound much better....

happiness.
if you need to make new ribbons, you can cut them yourself from hobbyist aluminum sheets. you can make a jig to put the proper crinkles in it out of the plastic transport gears of a broken ADAT machine a couple of screws and a block of wood. just another reason why that old stuff was awesome....
