i have an interest in the discussion of this question in this community!
what do you think?
1) many people i know are speaking about the possibility that the power and stability of pc´s is getting that good that the reason of using dsp-powered cards get to be useless. some people say that the dsp-factory.card will get out of market soon because of this!
2) many software-synths and -samplers are running stable in pc-systems and the power of the newer pc-procs and rams is that big that we can use many instruments as softwareinstruments!
3) where are the reasons gone to use still dsp´s for getting more power in our systems? think about this new possibility of propellerhead (i didnt´t try it up to now!) to bring something like we have in pulsar with their powerpack "reason" named!
and think about this new possibility from steinberg (this softwaresampler will (may) be real tough!)!

what do you think about it?

of course they have a future during the next few years.
as long as windoze will be the most sold os for personal computers.

and, if my computers can do all the things pulsar can co, in five years or so, why don´t leave the dsp´s inside for some more processong power?

i think we still have to wait a long time for those computers (and operating systems) we are dreaming of...
...just imagine: 20GHz, 100GB ram, no hard disk, BeOS, a big big touchscreen - and cubase 11.0 ...ok, that´s just what i´m dreaming of...

Meanwhile, I'm just thrilled that Win98, Pulsar II and VST32 actually make it possible for me to compose and record music without any major problems..

With Reason were going there faster then i thought. Its so CPU-efficient i cant believe it.There is no way i can overload my Mac G4/400, which i can very easily with Logic/EXS 24.However with my Pulsar II i get 4 ms latency and 16 adat in/outs so i dont regret buying it.And there will always be a demand for professional in:s and out:s.

right. i didn´t mean that today´s systems don´t run properly.
i just meant - what will be possible and how user friendly these future computers will be.

Subject: DSP's

CPU's are getting so fast now. By the end of this year they will have reached 2GHz with DDR SDRAM or quad pumped Rambus memory. Windoze 98 will have been replaced with a unified Windows 2000 which has the reliability and power we all crave.

To my ears many VST instruments (Reaktor, Pro52, B4 etc) also sound better than Pulsar's. So in my opinion DSP cards like Pulsar will soon begin to decline in popularity especially with news of a different kind of card to be released later this year (TC Works PowerCore) that runs VST effects and possibly later VST synths as well. This will invisibly work with any VST compatible software and add the equivilant power of "FOUR" G4/500 Mac's.

So there you have it.

The future is bright, the future is native.
