Emagic offers migration plan to existing Logic 5 Windows users

Emagic has always enjoyed a very close relationship with you, the users of our products - regardless of the platform you chose to use. Together, we have developed Logic into one of the most powerful systems of its kind, and now that Emagic is a member of the Apple family, Logic will become even better. Obviously, the platform does matter now and we would like to cordially invite all Logic Windows users to join us on the Macintosh.

It goes without saying that we will continue to service and support all Logic Windows owners according to the standard product warranty policies beyond September, 30th 2002. The Logic 5.2 subrelease that we recently announced is a perfect example of our commitment to servicing every existing user.

In addition, for those users of Logic 5 on Windows who wish to enjoy all the current and future benefits of Logic running on the Mac platform, Emagic will make a free cross-platform crossgrade available from August 1st. This free crossgrade offer will allow you to keep and use your current Logic 5 Windows version - Logic Audio 5, Gold 5 or Platinum 5 - on Macintosh as well. The offer will be available until December 31st 2002 for every registered Logic 5 Windows user, and details about how to apply will be released shortly. Perhaps you can xgrade your pc. Send it to Apple and ask if you can have a dual G4 for free instead .

Installers for Gold and Logic Audio 5.1.3 are on the CD that ships with the Protools|HD extension...

why the time limit of less than six months to do it all, I'm not going to have the cash to get a Mac by December, I feel pressurised.......maybe that's the plan?

Who's to say if I spend $3000 switching to a Mac that eMagic won't abandon us there, too? Once burned...

I did the Cubase SX crossgrade... I'll be using Logic/PC for the forseeable future though, since I have reservations about the audio engine quality of Cubase (can't wait to try it and I hope it has improved since Cubase 3.7 days when I really thought it sounded poor).

Does this mean we won't get that Pulsar-Logic thread? Would be nice!

Cubase 3.7? That's a looong time ago! Okay, perhaps the Logic audio engine was superior at that time, I don't know, cause I didn't work with it. But I know that the current Logic engine is surely not superior to the Cubase SX one, cause I have been working with both. And Cubase SX has this 32 bit and 32 bit truetape mode that I couldn't do without anymore.

What's the file size when using 32bit true tape maode in SX? I'm currently using 24bit/44.1k (LAWP v5).....so how does it compare with this?

Well, it is absolutely linear, i.e. in units of a 44.1 KHz 8 bit wav file: a 16 bit file has twice the size of an 8 bit one, a 24 bit file has 3 times the size of an 8 bit one and a 32 bit file has 4 times the size of an 8 bit one. In other words, a 32 bit truetape file has 4/3 the size of a 24 bit file of equal length and samplerate.

Apparently, it is even easyer for a cpu to process 32 bit files, cause 32 bit goes through without any conversions, other than 16 bit or 24 bit. That mean that you can actually even get more performance out of your system by using 32 bits. Of course, it takes more hdd space, but that's not really a problem, these days.

I will continue to use Logic for the forseeable future, but will start playing with SX on the side. I am sure SX has better Rewire, VST, etc, but I'm most concerned-and talking about- the actual sound quality of the audio engine. I'll know more once my SX crossgrade arrives this week and give some initial impressions..

Just as an aside, it looks as though you can't run SX on the 95/98/Millenium platform.

For those users, an upgrade there as well.

I just read at kvr-vst.com that the next version of Cubase SX (I think 1.02) will support Win98, although Steinberg will give no official support for it and still recomends Win2000/XP.

XP is very stable and reliable, also for audio applications. I think that it is a very good idea to replace old DOS based Win98 by it. The upgrade to the home edition is quite cheap anyway.
