First of all I'd like to tell you that I'm not so worried about the genre definitions coz this is a very subjective matter, of course, and I don't know if someone is going to find a better solution or if it's even possible, so, music for me, I like it (more or less) or I don't.
I've been hearing some very different kinds/styles/genres of music for, at least, 30 years ago and I may call it like jazz, rock, reggae, pop, electronic, soul, dance, etc and find several sub-divisions or fusions between them and so, they can't always be straight obvious.
As long as there have been a great increasing in music prodution last years, I've been finding more and more difficult to establish such patterns and that's why I'd like to talk about.
Actually I've seen new generic words in "modern" music like house, techno, acid, down, hop (hip/trip), trance, chillout, ambient, world, and whatelse... and several times I get misunderstanding all these. Maybe this is only a method of industry/shops/radios/etc have found to easily catalog things but some confusion may lead the bands/artists to be better promoted/found/known or not.
At the same time I think nobody knows where things are going with the internet development and the modifications it's leading around our way of living, in next few time.
Everyone of us can get an easy way to show our work now, but I also feel something wrong when I see top charts, grammies, awards and all that stuff around. I don't mean/desire I want to become rich making music but I see (hear) so much uninteresting art creation giving lots of money to some "experts" and many other talentous people are wasting there time in stupid kind of jobs... But nobody has said that life must be juste, has it?
Turning back to topic I'll try to examplify with some existing groups/projects (I've been enjoying to) mostly in the electronic area, with vocals, some band format, some acoustic/real instruments based, but whose I feel something in common that I can't define. Maybe just my personal taste and nothing about the genre...?!
(with no special order)
1- These I find more similar but what genre? : thievery corporation, groove armada, smight&mighty, kruder&dorfmeister, jazzanova, chemical brothers, nightmares on wax, future sound of london, st. germain, fila brazzillia, james hardway, faze action, the orb, jimi tenor, cinematic orchestra, tosca, dzihan&kamien, etc enough...
2- These share something in between/and/or with above but from completly/not so different genre: massive attack, alpha, lamb, arab strap, mogway, belle&sebastien, spain, little axe, low, rinocerose, air, royksopp, plaid, howieB, guy called gerald, amon tobin, nitin sawhney, hector zazou, jah wobble, david sylvian, arto lindsay, united future organisation, stereolab, layka, zero 7, us 3, waldeck, juno reactor, speedy g, aphex twin, autreche, mouse on mars, underworld, etc, etc, ...what a confusion and influence and ...time to play myself?
have funny times, please

Ever listen to something else than the stuff that sounds like it's been done for radio?

Most of what I hear coming from the net is techno and D&B.

PlanetZ is one of the rare places we get to hear some really constructive musical work. I have a great respect for each and everyone og the guys who post music here.

On to the question:

Want me to have fun posting my views on this subject?

I say "Fuck styles and Tagging a name on this or that type of music". If it's well done and/or well thought out I'll add it to my discography, whether is is dance music or a piano concerto by some unknown finnish composer.

Music is about sound and emotion. So screw the record labels for endlessly putting out the same garbage week after week and screw that company that imposes that horrid playlist on the people of North America. I am sick of hearing that same Evanescence tune over and over, every hour on the hour, dammit!

I hope someone will come up with a way of making the internet a true platform for us with a different view on music and make US rich and famous.

Ok. wake up, Paul. It's all a dream...(been watching Vanilla Sky)
